Lower yields help gold after the midterm vote

Gold holders face a test from US jobs data because stronger hiring could lift yields and the dollar, putting pressure on bullion.

Gold’s rebound now depends more on yields and the dollar than on the midterm result that started it.

The chain matters because the same move that lifted bullion can reverse quickly. The same report said the dollar slid to its lowest in more than a month and the Treasury yield fell to its lowest since September 10.

Gold extended gains after jumping more than 3% following the midterm election results. The same report said the dollar and Treasury yields fell as investors bet the Trump administration’s tax and spending plans may face limits.

blue News reported that President Donald Trump’s Republican Party suffered a crushing defeat in the midterms and that the dollar came under pressure against all other currencies. gulfnews.com reported that the dollar and Treasury yields fell as investors bet the Trump administration’s tax and spending plans may face limits. That suggests the political result reached gold through currency and bond markets.

Coinpaper reported that the US dollar index fell approximately 0.6% to 101.27, while the benchmark Treasury yield dropped nearly five basis points to around 4.915%. gulfnews.com explained why the drop in yields helps gold: the metal pays no interest. That leaves cash and bonds offering less competition when yields fall.

TradingKey reported that a weaker dollar reduced the cost of buying gold for holders of other currencies, while falling Treasury yields lowered the cost of holding gold, which pays no interest. fxleaders.com said the dollar and yields matter more for gold’s next move than the election result alone. That suggests the same election result would have mattered less if the dollar had rallied or yields had risen.

The move also showed up beyond the spot market. The Economic Times reported that in international markets on Wednesday, gold December futures settled at $4,073.00 per troy ounce, gaining 3.37%, while silver December futures closed at $52.282 per troy ounce, up 5.08%. That does not prove a lasting precious-metals run, but it shows gains in both futures contracts.

The Rate Threat Did Not Disappear

Since April 2026, the correlation between gold and US stocks has remained elevated, according to a finance.biggo.com report. Of the 11 days this year when the Nasdaq fell more than 2%, gold fell more than 1.7% on eight.

History gives that warning more force. A finance.biggo.com report said only in October 2013 and July 2022 did inflation-adjusted yields fall by more than 25 basis points while gold dropped more than 5%, and it tied those exceptions to ETF redemptions after quantitative easing expectations were fully priced and to a sharp strengthening of the dollar. The lesson is narrow but useful: falling real yields help, but a stronger dollar can still break the trade.

The Federal Reserve is the cleaner threat. A finance.biggo.com report said markets were pricing roughly a 78% probability of a rate increase in December, according to CME FedWatch data cited in the report. It also said the main risk still came from the Federal Reserve, because stronger US employment data could lift yields and the dollar again, weighing on gold.

TradingKey made the same point from the other side, saying economic data that continue to support rate-hike expectations could leave gold constrained by a higher interest-rate environment. FX Leaders added that another increase, together with persistent inflation and resilient growth, could lift real yields and support the dollar. Those are not contradictions of the rally; they are the conditions that would end it.

Coinpaper described the move as a reversal from the previous gold market selloff, when rising interest-rate expectations and technology-stock losses pressured precious metals. A reversal needs continued support after the initial shock. fxleaders.com said the dollar and yields matter more for gold’s next move than the election result alone. That suggests a sustained rebound depends on where the dollar and yields go next.

A finance.biggo.com report said strong hiring data would reinforce the case for higher rates, while a weak reading would ease rate pressure and give gold room to run. That makes employment data the public hinge between two paths: a higher-rate dollar rebound that could hurt bullion, or softer rate pressure that could let the recovery extend.

For households, the same chain shows up in local prices before it shows up in a portfolio statement. UAE gold climbed 2.4%, up Dh11, as the US vote weakened the dollar. A buyer of jewelry feels that as a higher local ticket; a saver feels the other side through the interest income forgone when choosing an asset that pays no interest.

For institutions, the fork is cleaner. If the weak-dollar, lower-yield move persists, gold hedges gain support because the cost of holding bullion falls relative to interest-bearing assets. If hiring data revive the case for higher rates, the same hedge becomes more expensive to carry, and the pressure shifts back toward the dollar.

The Economic Times reported Thursday that both metals were expected to remain volatile this week amid fluctuations in crude oil prices, the dollar index and US jobs data. That list is a useful guardrail: the midterm result was the first link, but oil, jobs and the dollar can still pull the chain in different directions.

Gold’s next move depends more on yields and the dollar than on the election result alone. The next signal comes from jobs data and what happens to yields and the dollar.

The last time

Real yields fell while gold dropped

What rhymes

A finance.biggo.com report said real yields fell by more than 25 basis points while gold dropped more than 5% in those two episodes, so falling real yields alone did not protect bullion.

What is different

The current reports describe a softer dollar and falling Treasury yields after the midterm result, while the older exceptions had ETF redemptions or a sharp dollar strengthening as clear drivers.

What it means for the forecast

The comparison suggests the dollar is the weak link for the bullish case: if it strengthens with yields, the rates support can vanish even when real yields move in gold’s favor.

More likely than not, though the quoted market level leaves room for a pullback. Gold holders gain if bullion stays firm, while the market level is not a guarantee.

If yes, Gold holders gain from firmer bullion values, because continued support from lower yields can sustain demand.

More likely than not as the dollar and yields have recently supported gold, though a reversal could pressure bullion. Gold holders gain if it holds firm; the quoted market level is only a reference.

Settled by CME Group · YES if CME Group's page shows the December 2026 gold futures settlement at or above $4,016 per troy ounce for December 4, 2026, the last trading day before the deadline; NO if it shows a lower settlement. If no settlement is shown, resolve NO.

If yes, Gold holders gain from continued bullion value, because demand can persist when yields and the dollar ease.

More likely than not because lower yields and a weaker dollar can support gold, although stronger hiring could reverse that help. Gold holders gain if bullion remains firm; the quoted market level is a benchmark.

If yes, Gold holders gain from sustained bullion value, because demand can remain supported when yields and the dollar ease.
