A qualified package cannot be swapped when the die is ready
Packaging is narrow because the finished part is not defined by the die alone. Materials, interfaces, bonding, inspection and thermal performance must work together, then pass qualification for that exact design. The IEEE Electronics Packaging Society’s 2026 roadmap identifies those linked steps as the work still needed to advance advanced packaging.
If packaging stops, completed wafers cannot become usable processors. A substitute package is not an interchangeable spare: changing its materials or assembly can alter heat flow, electrical connections and reliability, forcing fresh testing before shipments resume. The queue therefore reaches backward into fabrication and forward into servers, even when wafer output continues.
